KickStart This: Sept. 6 – PAX Prime Edition

kickstarterWelcome to another edition of KickStart This. This marks article number eight in the series for this year and is coming to you a few days late due to our trip to PAX Prime and being overwhelmed with the awesomeness that is PAX.  Okay, truth be told, helping to run a booth and doing interviews as media is hectic and I had no down time to process any articles once I did the interviews.  So we’re a wee bit late – okay almost 5 days late – but better late than never.

Before I take a look at the projects to talk about this week, let’s take a quick look at the KickStarter Projects mentioned in our previous articles to see how they are doing funding wise.

Project Standings as of Sept 4, 2013:

Now to look at projects that we found interesting for this week.

tabletop-connect1.  Tabletop Connect: 3D Virtual Tabletop for Windows and Mac by Carl Pinder

Have you ever wanted to play RPGs with friends who have moved far away, making it almost impossible to play a good game locally.  Some of us have substituted and used Skype to play RPGs with friends who have moved elsewhere.  But now we have the opportunity to play with our friends via Tabletop Connect, a 3D Virtual Tabletop that lets you play with your friends as if they were right there with you.

This project launched Aug. 24 and has raised $13,725 – a little more than half the funding goal of $22,000.  The project has 16 days remaining to reach its initial funding goal.

The program is intended to launch with the ability to play any RPG system through it – so from my understanding you could play anything your heart desires whether it be D&D 3.0 or 4.5 or Star Wars RPG or Pathfinder.  That makes the system very flexible for gamers.  Or, if you prefer to play with miniatures, you can do that with the program as well.

The game comes complete with an ability to create/fill in character sheets from any character sheet that is in an image format as well as auto-mapping software.  The auto-mapping software is neat because it will keep things hidden and move your character the number of tiles accurately without you having to count it out. Factor in that the developers intend the game to be DRM free and it’s a win-win situation.

For as little as $10, you get the players edition of the game which will allow you to play in the overall game.  For $35 you get the GM’s edition which includes 12 miniatures and 3 terrain sets.  The perks only go up from there.

So if you’re interested in playing various RPGs with friends from days past, you might want to check this out – and get your friends to check it out too and donate for either player or GM versions as it will help you bring back the fun times of days past.  The project can be found here:  http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/840448191/tabletop-connect-3d-virtual-tabletop?ref=category

case-for-humanity2.  Case for Humanity by Greg Spence

This project doesn’t really need a lot of help as it is already way over it’s initial funding goal of $1,000.  It currently sits at almost $19,000 raised with 12 days to go.

This project is to create a wooden case for the card game Cards Against Humanity.  Cards Against Humanity currently has more than 700 cards if you have purchased all the sets.  As it is a game people like to bring with them to play with others, it only makes sense that someone might be interested in a wooden carrying case.

Correction, so far 382 backers have been interested in the Case for Humanity.  And I’m sure with all the folks who bought out the Cards Against Humanity packs at PAX, there will be even more interested.

The cool thing is, this can be used for any card game, not just Cards Against Humanity.  So if you play Dominion or Magic: the Gathering or anything else, it would work for that too.

Both stretch goals have been reached for the project, so all funding will be going into buying materials and such to make the product.  For as little as $25 you can get all the parts to put your case together yourself – great for DIYers. For $40 you get a full assembled case and better perks the higher you go.

Even though it’s fully funded, if you’re interested in pick up a box, I strongly suggest checking it out and contributing to it: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gspence/case-for-humanity?ref=category

tetrapulse3.  Tetrapulse by David Laskey

Tetrapulse is a cooperative game where players must save the planet they are on using the only thing available to them – their life force.  The idea for this game came from the Global Game Jam.

The game promises a game that requires co-operative play in order to win.  Players will have to work together to get the Heartstone and move it to where it is needed to provide defenses for that area.  Which makes it an interesting game to play.

For as little as $10 you get a digital copy of the game + a personalized Vine video and a thank you in the game credits.  If you’re a big spender, you could drop $10,000 to get a one and only unique 4 player version of the game on an arcade cabinet.  Pretty sweet.

With 18 days to go, the team has already raised $5,587 of their $15,000 goal.  If it’s a game you think you’d be interested in, check it out here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/575525637/tetrapulse?ref=category

starcraft-universe4.  Starcraft Universe by Upheaval Arts

This one caught my eye because even though I haven’t had time to play Starcraft, I am a fan of Starcraft and mods for Starcraft which is exactly what this project is.

Starcraft Universe is defined as “telling a story set in an alternate reality, where the ending of StarCraft II:Wings of Liberty has a grim conclusion for Kerrigan. Without the Queen of Blades to stop the hybrid’s assault, the protoss are overwhelmed and defeated. In this reality, what would the survivors of these shattered worlds do? StarCraft Universe tells this story.

StarCraft Universe (SCU) is a game mod (Note: it is not a standalone game) for StarCraft II. Originally named World of StarCraft, SCU focuses on telling an epic story and intense combat action, as well as highly replay-able multi-player experiences. StarCraft Universe will be released as a series of custom games published through Battle.net.”

The game promises new monsters, bosses AND character classes as well as a ton of other stuff.

The project has been backed by more than 1,200 people and has raised $69,755 of the $80,000 needed to make it a successfully funded project.  With four days to go, the project is likely to get the funding it needs, but just in case it still needs a boost, check it out and see if you like any of the perks and donate what you can.  The project also has a number of stretch goals to achieve if they reach their initial funding goal.   The project can be found here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/747939120/starcraft-universe?ref=category

video-game-artwork-posters5.  Video Game Artwork Posters by Matt Stott

This project just barely exceeded its funding goal of 1,000 pounds, raising 1,604 pounds total, as of its end date of Aug. 26.

Matt’s designed some minimalistic video game-related posters to decorate your gaming area with.  With designs ranging from Mario Bros. to Space Invaders to Halo, he’s bound to have something you would like to have adorning your wall.

With 10 designs already created, he plans to do a limited run of professionally printed and numbered prints of the designs and ship them to whoever ordered them.

Matt had some interesting perks, including for as little as 10 pounds, you could get all 10 prints as postcards or for as little as 20 you could get a single, numbered print shipped to you.

Even though the project is finished, check out his artwork here:  http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1506296950/video-game-artwork-posters
