November Gamer of the Month Challenge: The Dr.’s Challenge


Video Game Scoreboard is pleased to announce the fourth “Gamer of the Month” challenge – the November Dr.’s Challenge. The October Geometry Challenge concluded with two entries and Dave Vogt being named winner.

The November Dr.’s Challenge is on Dr. Mario. This competition will be open to multiple platforms. Please see the rules below for an explanation and the break down.

The Rules:

  1. This month’s competition runs from today, Nov. 17 to Dec. 17, 2013. November winners will be announced in the second half of December, once all scores are verified and places tallied.
  2. Players must submit a recording of their score attempt on Dr. Mario with the Game Settings found below.
  3. Players may compete on the systems listed below. They may ONLY compete on Dr. Mario – High Speed variation for this competition. Scores for this game will be added to our variation list under each system found below. For the purpose of the competition, a combined scoreboard will show the ranks of all players competing together.
  4. Recording rules must be followed.
  5. Attempt starts when the play button is hit. Score will be when you die or the game freezes.
  6. Pausing is not allowed.
  7. Final Score is the score submitted for recording purposes.
  8. Players may submit in any of the ways we accept, however, if you are mailing submissions in, please be sure to have them postmarked no later than Dec. 10, 2013, so we can receive them in time for the Dec. 17 deadline.

The November Dr.’s Challenge is this: Players get to see how high of a score they can set playing Dr. Mario on the highest speed with one life on any of a number of platforms.

Game Settings:
Settings for this Dr. Mario competition are the same for all platforms, whether PAL or NTSC.

  • High Speed
  • 1 Life
  • Players Choice for music
  • Players choice on virus level

It has been noted that at this speed, the larger combinations caused may cause the game to freeze. If at any point your game should freeze, your scoring attempt is finished and the last score on the screen prior to freezing is the final score.


Allowed Systems: PAL or NTSC for any

  • 3DS Virtual Console- Dr. Mario (GameBoy port)
  • NES
  • GameBoy
  • GameBoy Color
  • Game Boy Advance- Classic NES Series Dr. Mario (NES Port) or Dr. Mario/Puzzle League
  • Nintendo 64- Dr.Mario 64
  • Super NES – via Tetris & Dr. Mario

You may use the GameBoy Player with the GameCube to play and record your scores easier.  Please note – it is still considered a GameBoy, GameBoy Color or GameBoy Advance record, not a GameCube record.



The Gamer of the Month will receive:

  • VGS T-Shirt
  • Interview for Gamer Profile
  • Named Gamer of the Month for that Month
  • Competes at end of year Gamer of the year Tournament
