Join us on Oliver’s Road to Redemption

10348231_10154141989550082_7451938826679234811_nThis weekend one of our writers, Oliver Campbell, is undertaking a challenging journey – riding his bike from Des Moines, Iowa, to West Bend, Iowa, where the Grotto of the Redemption is.

I’ve known Oliver for many years now and I’ve followed and talked with him and his health issues, so I know what he’s doing and why he’s doing it and the challenge this is for him.

After three years of serious health issues, Oliver wanted to live and enjoy life and find his strength again – thus him finding the Retrospec Bicycles and deciding to do this ride. However, to make the ride successful, Oliver needed funds to make it happen.

Per his GoFundMe Page (where you can read his entire story as well):

So why do I need your help? Because there’s only so far willpower can take me, and I can’t do everything on my own. I know what the limits of my body are, but I don’t know what the limits of my equipment is. To be successful in this venture, I need the following in sufficient supply in order to prepare for and embark on this journey:

1217340_1396900026.4937-Replacement wheelsets
-Replacement tires
-Replacement intertubes
-Dedicated toolkits/repair tools (pumps, battery rechargers, etc)
-First Aid Kits
-Rations
-Replacement nuts, bolts, etc
-Adequate safety-equipment and clothing
-Mounting racks and gear to carry what I need
-Fuel for my SAG Wagon (which will be my best friend Jayme driving)
-Reliable two-way communication between myself and my SAG Wagon
-Small, miscellaneous expenses

And of course, most importantly…

-A way to record video of my journey the entire way. Because I won’t be going alone. I’m taking you guys with me.

I want you all to be there with me the whole way. I want you to see my struggles, to see me fail and fall and to get up, to fight. I want you to be able to see the world as I see it, to see the pain and tension, when it feels hard but even more importantly, to see me succeed. I want you to see the moment when I cross that line, and I will have redeemed myself in the most holiest of grounds for willpower.

10447641_10154335007370082_4372970283920153320_nOliver met his goal of $1500 a week or so ago and we at Video Game Scoreboard are happy to be one of his sponsors for his ride. We also want to encourage you to go on his trip with him and, as he stated “I want 2014 to be the year that I take my life back from the demon of chronic pain. But I don’t want to do it alone. I want to do it with you. We can do this, and all we have to do is try. “

You can follow his ride this weekend here:

His wife, Danika, along with the app he’s been using to follow his training progress, will be posting to the event and to his Facebook wall.  Let’s cheer Oliver, a fellow gamer, on in this exciting and daring endeavor.

Video Interview with Richard Garriott and Starr Long Re: Shroud of the Avatar

shroud-of-the-avatarI was extremely fortunate (and hopefully didn’t fangirl too much) to meet both Richard Garriott and Starr Long of Ultima and Ultima Online fame at E3 this year.  The two are working on a new project with Garriott’s company, Portalarium, called Shroud of the Avatar – which is being called the spiritual successor to Ultima Online.

Shroud of the Avatar was successfully funded by Kickstarter last year and Portalarium continues their funding effort with an ongoing pledge system on their website, all the while allowing backers to test each play release for a weekend when that release is available.

The gentlemen were nice enough to squeeze us into a time slot at their booth to answer a few questions by fans of Shroud of the Avatar.  Enjoy the video below!

Plantronics Gaming Giving Away Early Access to Shroud of the Avatar

splashScreenA little over a year ago, Richard Garriott, with Portalarium, launched a Kickstarter for the spiritual successor to Ultima and Ultima Online, called Shroud of the Avatar.  The project was funded and continues to gather funding and followers through their website.  With more than $4.25 million raised thus far for the game, it’s not a surprise that Portalarium has teamed up with a number of companies, including Plantronics Gaming, to spread the word about their game.

Richard Garriott, Starr Long and other members of the Portalarium team were at E3 to talk about Shroud of the Avatar – we will have a video interview later.  But post E3, Plantronics announced a give away for Early Access to Shroud of the Avatar.

If you aren’t a backer and are interested in learning more about the game, try your hand at a chance to win one of 1,000 early access keys.

The first 1,000 people to sign up get a key.  Best of luck!  Look forward to our interview later this week.
