Troubles Plague Marathon Attempt

nibbler_000A marathon run on the classic arcade game, Nibbler, was held Dec. 26, 2013 at Star Worlds Arcade with Mitchell Meerman at the helm competing for first place. The run was to raise funds for TAP – UIUC Champaign Urbana.

The run started at 7 a.m. but failed a few hours later when the machine was accidentally reset.  Not willing to give up, the marathon attempt restarted after 3 p.m.

Unfortunately, the time lost from the first run was a toll on Mitchell and his marathon run ended with 251,169,160 after twelve hours of play.  Factor in that he had another 7 hours before that and it’s an impressive feat and deserving of being added to our list of scores.

While he didn’t make the world record spot he was hoping for, the score does put him in the top 10 scores* of all time on Nibbler Marathons.  The current world record depending on which site you use is either Tim McVey with Twin Galaxies and 1,041,767,060 points or Elijah Hayter on Aurcade with 1,042,774,470.

*Exact score place is 6th place based on research to compile the top 10 Nibbler Marathon scores found here.

Billy Joe Cain, who won the Texas Defender Championships in 1982, proved he could still defend earth from alien invaders at the  Star World’s Arcade Summer Sizzle event Aug. 3.

Billy set a number of unique records on Defender at the event, including the following:

As part of the Classic Crazy Challenge, Billy set an initial score of 134,600 points on the first life, but eventually upped that score, ending with 144,750 points on his first life.  Players in the Classic Crazy Challenge were asked to submit their highest score set on the first life of play.  Many players, Billy included, kept trying over and over to up their score before they finally submitted their top score.

Billy also set two records on the same game.  The first record he set was Fastest Time to 1 Million Points, which he achieved in 50 minutes and 12 seconds.  He then continued playing from there to see how many points he could achieve in an hour of play.  His final score after an hour was 1,251,750.

Not satisfied to end his run there, Billy also played a round of Stargate on Industry Standard Tournament Settings.  While he didn’t set a world record with that run, he did score high enough to place fourth on those tournament settings, with a score of 130,425.

Billy’s son, Matthew Cain, also participated in setting records, playing on the 3-player settings on Stargate and setting a score of 54,750.

Congratulations to both Billy and Matthew for the records set at the Star Worlds Arcade Summer Sizzle Event.
