Gaming News Weekly Recap – March 9 – 15, 2014

vgs-weekly-news-march-9-15We can’t easily cover all the news each week with our small team, so instead, we’ll bring you a Gaming News Weekly Recap for the previous week each Sunday  – sometimes earlier, sometimes later on Sunday or early Monday morning, depending on what I’ve got going on.  Obviously, this week is coming out on Monday, because I got delayed while writing.  No…I wasn’t distracted playing Hearthstone.  Okay…maybe I was.

A lot of things happened this week and some of these will link to other articles on other sites in addition to our quick rundown or comments on them.  Most of the articles will link to official websites where you can find more information on the game; only a few articles will link to original sources that are not official sites.

World of Warcraft announces pre-order for Warlords of Draenor, purchase of Boost to 90

Ahh yes, it comes as no surprise that Blizzard announces that Pre-Orders are now available for $49.99 or $69.99 for their next expansion, Warlords of Draenor.  Expected to be released on or before Dec. 20, players now have an incentive to order early.  When you pre-order your copy of the expansion, you get the boost to 90 code automatically, so you can boost any character you want to 90.  Are you ready for an influx of people who don’t know how to play certain classes?  It’s bound to happen.

Not only that, for $60 you can boost any character, even level 1, to 90 now.  While the price seems a bit steep, I don’t think it’s too steep and may prevent people from doing a mass leveling of characters – unless they have a ton of money to waste on it.

As for myself?  I think I’m going to make a 90 Horde Lock or Druid as i already have that Alliance side.

Hearthstone Open Beta Release – Hearthsteed if you win 3 play-mode games

We first covered Hearthstone back in April 2013 when the game was initially announced at PAX East and once I got into closed beta, I found that I thoroughly enjoyed the game – perhaps even better than Magic: The Gathering on the PC.  The game is easy to learn through the forced tutorial play through, but once you complete it, it’s all about playing and leveling classes, completing quests to earn gold so you can earn or buy new cards for your decks.

While Hearthstone allows you to buy cards with real life funds, it does have a way for you to earn gold to regularly buy packages and there doesn’t’ seem to be a true advantage to buying cards unless you’re just wanting to create your best decks faster.

With open beta, you can now challenge friends to games and see how you stack up against them.  In addition to this, once you pass the tutorial stages and can compete in Play and Arena modes, you have the chance to earn a Hearthsteed for your World of Warcraft account.  This is probably the easiest steed to acquire – all you have to do is win 3 rounds in Casual or Ranked mode.

Hearthstone is a free game.  Now that it’s in Open Beta, download it and check it out.  You might find it to be a lot of fun.  Seeing that e-sports is getting bigger, I expect this to be a title in future e-sports tournaments.

Titanfall_wallpaper2560x1440Titanfall Releases

Titanfall, released March 11, had the biggest launch of 2014 across all platforms – not really surprising considering it was one of the most anticipated games for both PC and Xbox.  But the launch also increased Xbox One sales by 96% according to Digital Spy.

As I’m not big into first-person shooters/mech warrior games, this isn’t a game I’ve purchased, but I can’t deny the popularity of it.  If you haven’t checked out Prod1gy’s tutorial we featured a few weeks back and just purchased the game you might want to check it out.

Speaking of Prod1gy, he attempted a world record marathon on Titanfall, but was unfortunately ended due to his ISP cutting out on him.  We hope he plans to try again and that the internet doesn’t stop him.

dark-souls-2Dark Souls 2 releases

Also released this past week, Dark Souls 2 ranked second in sales compared to Titanfall.  This game, I’ve heard from one of our reporters who’s playing it – is extremely hard, especially if you don’t patch the game.  Patch the game and things aren’t quite as hard, but don’t let it fool you.  It’s a difficult game.

While Darks Souls 2 is the sequel to Dark Souls, the creator says other than it being set in the same world, there is no storyline tie together.  If you enjoyed either Dark Souls or Demon Souls, you may want to consider picking up Dark Souls 2 as it seems to be well worth it.

sxsw-2014SXSW Marred by Tragedy

South by Southwest (SXSW) ran March 7 through March 16 and was full of panels and events, including our friends at AbleGamers Foundation and Kerbal Space Program having a presentation there.

The annual event draws more than 70,000 attendees, artists and demonstrators to the city of Austin and features game demonstrations, panels, concerts, film screenings and much more.

Sadly, this year’s event was marred by a drunk driver, who has been charged with two counts of capital murder for an accident which occurred while he was driving under the influence.  The accident killed two, injured more than 20 others. For more information:

league-of-legendsLoL South Korean Player Attempts Suicide

On the heels of the SXSW tragedy, news came across of a League of Legends player who recently attempted suicide and is in critical condition at a South Korean Hospital.  Cheon “Promise” Min-Ki jumped from the 12th floor after learning their team’s manager lied to them over sponsorship, was selling off equipment meant for the team and was rigging matches.

If you’ve watched FRAG, you know that sponsorships don’t always come through as promised and sponsors often go back on their promises.  It sounds like “Promise” got the bad end of the stick on this, but do remember suicide should never be an option as it’s a very permanent end to a temporary problem.

Riot’s Korean Division of League of Legends are investigating the match fixing accusations.

“Promise” has a long road for recovery ahead of him as well as high medical costs.  People have initiated fundraising campaigns on Reddit and for him.  If you are inclined to help, click those links for more information.

This one came out of the blue and is quite surprising.  For fans of Ultima Online, you may want to take a close look at the names you see associated with this upcoming MMORPG.
