KickStart This: Week of Oct. 28

kickstarterWelcome to this week’s edition of KickStart This.  There are a lot of interesting projects out there, whether they be video game documentaries, video games themselves or hardware, there’s a lot of projects to chose from.  As always, we thank folks who have taken time to email us about their projects and even more thanks to those who have agreed to do interviews with us which should appear in the near future.

Before we go into the projects we’re going to look at this week, let’s recap the projects that were still in progress as of last week and where they are in their fundraising endeavors.

Project Standings as of Oct. 27, 2013

  • Beyond Eyes by Sherida Halatoe has raised 4.230€ of the 10.000€ needed to fund the project. This is a flexible funding project, which means the developer will get whatever funds are raised, even if they don’t meet their goal of 10.000€.  They have three days left to raise funds for the game.  Check them out and consider donating to this interesting and unique game.  http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/beyond-eyes
  • CastAR: the most versatile AR & VR system by Technical Illusions has, unsurprisingly met and exceeded its goal a few days after launching the Kickstarter.  The project has raised more than $640,000 and continues to grow.   While they have no stretch goals listed, I won’t be surprised if they appear soon.  This system has a lot of potential to change the way we game and I look forward to seeing what they produce.  With 18 days remaining, you might consider chipping in a a bit to help the project go further.  Check it out here:  http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/technicalillusions/castar-the-most-versatile-ar-and-vr-system
  • Indie Van Game Jam by Binary Solo  has raised slightly less than 10% of their $40,000 goal.  As of this morning, they have raised $4,411 and have 9 days left to achieve their goal.  Check out what they’re up to – building games from a van while doing a webseries on other Indie Development Studios – and perhaps contributing to their project to make it successful.  http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/binarysolo/indie-van-game-jam
  • ARTCADE: The Coin-Op Art Book by Tim Nichols raised almost twice it’s goal with a total of £22,055 of its £10,000 goal.  This is a book I’m looking forward to seeing in print.  If you haven’t heard about the book, learn mroe about it here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/woodpunk/artcade-the-coin-op-art-book
  • Star Realms Deckbuilding Game by Robert Dougherty had beaten its goal last week, but continues to grow, having raised $36,665 of its $20,000 goal.  Like similar games in its genre, Star Realms has a lot of potential and for a reasonable investment, you can get a copy of the game to play once it releases by contributing to the Kickstarter.  Check it out here, and if you are going to contribute, do so in the next five days: :  http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1172937197/star-realms-deckbuilding-game
  • Bot Colony, The First Game to Understand and Respond Intelligently in English by Eugene Joseph, North Side Inc. only raised $2,539 of the $100,000 to make the project successfully funded. The creator canceled the project six days ago, so it is no longer up for funding.
  • World 1-1 by Jeanette Garcia and Daryl Rodriguez has 9 days to go to meet their goal of $15,000 and are only 1/3 of the way there, having raised $5,228 so far.  Check out what they’re working on and the first in the documentary series they’re wanting to create and help them reach their goal here:  http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1128229743/world-1-1
  • RETRO: The Multi-Format, Throw-Back Video Game Magazine by Mike Kennedy is nearing their goal of $50,000, having raised $40,758 with 6 days remaining to reach their goal.  I think they can do it, but need the next little push.  For as little as $7 you can get the premiere issue of the magazine.  For as little as $12, you can get digital copies of the magazine for a full year.  For as little as $30, you can get a full year of printed copies of the magazine.  So really – if you’re contributing now, it’s like you’re paying for your magazine subscription early.  Check it out, as there are plenty other options that may fit your needs and help them reach their goal.  http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/socalmike/retro-the-multi-format-throw-back-video-game-magaz
  • Obduction by Cyan, Inc., is steadily heading toward its goal of $1 million raised, currently sitting at more than $637,000.  With 19 days to go, I have no doubt that the creators of Myst and Riven will achieve their goal, but people should still consider contributing to this awesome game.  For as little as a $25 contribution, you get a digital copy of the game  as well as access to private forums and other little perks.  For as much as $4,500 you can attend the launch party at Cyan’s HQ.  There are, of course, a bunch of perks for contributing between those two amounts, but those seemed the most interesting – at least to me.  Check it out and see what appeals to you and consider contributing.  http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cyaninc/obduction

As always, we understand some folks can’t contribute to all the projects out there they want to see happen – I know I can only contribute to a few a year.  So if you can’t contribute, consider tweeting and talking about these projects to spread the word.

Now for this week’s projects, which include

red-baron-logo1.  Red Baron by Mad Otter Games

If you enjoyed the classic dog-fighting sim, Red Baron, you just may like this as it’s the same creators of Red Baron updating the game.  The project founders describe their intentions as:  “We will transform your PC into a fighter aircraft from the era that defined dogfighting. Our team built Red Baron, Aces of the Pacific, Aces over Europe, A-10 Tank Killer and Ace of Aces. We set the standard for flight games with excitement, realism, great gameplay, authenticity, and immersion. We continue the tradition now with Red Baron. … Red Baron will put you in the cockpit of a biplane fighter from the Great War. You will see your pilot working the controls: the stick, the throttle, and the guns.”

That sounds amazing.  And I enjoy dog-fighting games and if it’s a remake of a classic, being remade by its original creators, I think it can only be a good thing.

This project needs $250,000 to be fully funded.  It has raised $30,902 and has 24 days to go to reach the goal.

For as little as $15 you get a digital copy of the game and other digital perks.  For $45 you get the game, digital perks AND access to the game during Alpha testing. For $500, you will receive: FOUR COPIES of the Red Baron game; digital download wallpapers and art book, TEN limited edition insignia’s, TEN limited edition skins, alpha access, classic Red Baron pack, every standard plane skin, a signed Red Baron poster of your choice, and YOUR NAME in the credits as a supporter.  And for the biggest donation of $10,000, you will receive: Ten copies of the Red Baron game; digital download wallpapers and art book, ALL limited edition insignia’s and skins for ALL TEN of your game copies, alpha access, classic Red Baron pack, every standard plane skin for ALL TEN of your game copies, a signed Red Baron poster of your choice, your name in the credits as a PATRON, and a day and DINNER WITH THE TEAM where you will help DESIGN a SKIN, an UPGRADE, an INSIGNIA, and a MAP LANDMARK.

spark-rising2.  Spark Rising–Build. Battle. Conquer.  by Wicked Loot

This was one of those projects that came my way via press release in my email and I found it to be kind of interesting.

Spark Rising is a third-person action game, infused with strategy and sandbox creation. Players take the role of a Spark Bot whose prime directive is to build and conquer fortresses, then engage in massive battles, all in an attempt to protect rare resources. During the build phase, strongholds can be fortified with all sorts of nasty stuff — turrets, traps, barricades and troops. Players can even create their own creatures and weapons. Once the battle begins, gamers jump into unique class-based exo-suits to take down whole armies. The galaxy is for the taking, as the game expands into a 4X strategy game, where other players now enter the fray. Spark Rising is planned for release in 2014.

A new reward tier provides the first 100 supporters at the $45+ donation level with a free copy of the popular voxel-creation tool, Qubicle Constructor, which costs $40 on its own. All supporters of the Kickstarter, even at the minimum donation of $10, will receive Alpha access to Spark Rising when it becomes available.

With a little more than 2 days to go, the project needs a little less than $6,000 to meet their $17,000 goal.  For as little as a $10 contribution, you can get a digital copy of the game for PC or Mac.  There are a ton of new rewards in addition to previous awards available.  Check them out – $10 for a game is not bad and you’d be helping to get it funded while adding a game to your library.  If you like the idea behind the game, the project can be found here:  http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/johnmasterlee/spark-rising-a-build-battle-sandbox-game?ref=live

steam-works3.  Steam Works Video Game by Steam Works

This game looks to have an interesting premised based in one of my favorite genres: Steampunk.

With a little more than 2 weeks to go, this project needs to raise a total of $150,000 to be successful.  Sadly, it has only raised $2,475 which is why we are talking about it today.

Steam Works is an open world RPG set on the planet of Arcade where the player decides the fate of human and alien kind.  The game combines classic RPG elements with being a FPS.  So instead of swords and magic, you have Steampunk based weapons like lasers and plasma guns, etc.

This project, however, is one of those projects that looks too well done to get funding.  With the really awesome graphics and multiple videos completing the pitch, many people would ask why in the world they’d need funds for the game.  And perhaps that is why they need funds, they put a lot into it, now they just need the final amounts to finish it.

The world is well defined in the project as are some of the characters and potential evil characters/monsters as well.

For as little as a $15 contribution, you can receive a digital downloadable copy of Steam Works for XBOX1, XBOX360 PS4 or PC. This limited price point is only available for the first backers of Steam Works.  There are many other pledge levels from $15 all the way to $10,000 all of which contain copies of the game in addition to other perks for the respective contribution levels.  This would be a neat game to see get off the ground, so if you like Steampunk, check it out and consider being a contributor:  http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1725471086/steam-works-video-game?ref=tag

you-are-not-the-hero4.  You Are Not the Hero by Donn Manalili

While this project has already well exceed its goal of $12,000 – it’s sitting at $43,410 – I thought it was an interesting project to look at with 14 days remaining in its funding period.

You Are Not the Hero is described as  a 2D Action Platform RPG that ditches the battle system to focus on richer RPG gameplay elements. Instead of playing a traditional hero that saves the world, you’re playing a bystander swept into the affairs of heroes and villains alike.

You play as Petula, an unemployed, emotionally charged, ill-tempered, otherwise average young woman. With the royal army hot on their heels, the heroes have made their way to your village where they begin scavenging for supplies in everyone’s homes. After you confront them for stealing your pendant, they rush off to continue their quest, giving you a quest of your own to retrieve it.

The project page is full of fun details and quirks about the game – including mini-games and puzzles in the game itself as well as the fact it will have a custom soundtrack.  The game has an interesting appeal and perhaps that’s why the project has had such a successful funding push so far.

The funding on this project was so successful with contribution levels selling out that they added a number of additional contribution levels for people to contribute through.  I think almost every Kickstarter project founder would agree – that’s a good problem to have.  And let’s be honest, the $10 tier to receive a DRM free version of the game sold out, so they needed other options for people to contribute on.

This project has multiple stretch goals, several of which have already been unlocked.  If another $7,000 is raised, an extra chapter will be added to the game.  If a total of $60,005 is raised, another chapter, for a total of 2 extra chapters, will be added to the game.

As the $10 contribution level sold out, the lowest amount you can contribute to receive a copy of the game is $15 and you receive a couple other digital perks as well.  For $30 you can gain access to beta along with other perks.  For $2,000 you can get a whole bag of goodies, including the ability to design your own town in the game.  Only one contribution at that amount is available, but if you have that amount to throw at a game, you might consider it.

KickStart This: Week of Oct. 21

kickstarterOctober is almost over and we’re quickly moving into the Christmas season where money might be a little tighter for people who are wanting to buy presents for family and all that. But there are still worth Kickstarter Projects out there, and we’re going to feature three of them this week. Once again, sorry for the slight delay in getting this out. It has been a busy week at work and in my household. The article was 2/3 written Monday afternoon and I didn’t get a chance to touch it again till Wednesday and didn’t finish it till today.

Before I take a look at the projects to talk about this week, let’s do a quick recap of the KickStarter Projects mentioned in our previous article to see how they are doing funding wise – a number of them have been funded or well exceeding their funding goal.

Project Standings as of Oct. 21

  • Terminus by Ryan Czech fell short of its $28,000 goal, raising only $10,677 CAD so far. This interesting Sim-City like game for colonizing planets has potential and I wouldn’t be surprised if they try another Kickstarter or another campaign for funding.   • The Ballads of Reemus 2 – 2D Point and Click Adventure Game by Jay Ziebarth reached and exceeded the goal of $15,000, raising a total of $17,276 and unlocking both stretch goals. Now on to the three new projects we are looking at, which include the first in a documentary series on video games, a print magazine for retro news and retro articles from the past and a game from a company that made some of our PC favorite games.

world-1-11. World 1-1 by Jeanette Garcia and Daryl Rodriguez

Another video game documentary – I know, I know, some folks are probably tired of seeing these, but I think this one is neat because it’s a series that will cover the history of video games, especially the early years. And if you are like me, the early years were before you were born – I was born in 1980 but I still love the classic.

World 1-1 is the first full-length film in the documentary series and will be covering:

  • The business deals
  • The personalities of the pioneers
  • The creations of the engineers
  • Retelling the story

The money from this Kickstarter goes to equipment needed to produce the documentary as well as travel expenses to interview key figures including, but not limited to, Nolan Bushnell, David Crane, and others.

With 16 days to go and only $2,107 of the $15,000 needed raised, this project could use a little retro-gaming love. For as little as $20 you get a digital copy of the film, a digital wallpaper and thanks in the movies for contributing to its success. For $35 you get a DVD of the film and all the perks of the $20 contribution. And if you’re a big spender and are looking to contribute $1,000 to $5,000, you can be an executive producer and earn other exclusive perks to those reward levels. retro-magazine2. RETRO: The Multi-Format, Throw-Back Video Game Magazine by Mike Kennedy

Video game auction site GameGavel.com and the RetroGamingRoundup.com podcast have teamed up to create this Kickstarter to fund a Retro-gaming Magazine titled RETRO. This magazine will be “an independent print, digital and online publication dedicated to the past, present and future of the video gaming pastime that will hearken back to the amazing magazines from the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s.”

Each issue promises to be 52 pages long with only 4 pages of advertisements. They already have a team of writers ready to go including Patrick Scott Patterson, Keith Robinson, Michael Thomasson, Alexandra Hall and many others.

The initial funding goal of $50,000 covers the cost of publishing six issues. They do have stretch goals to increase number of pages printed and other published items.

It would be great to see another gaming magazine out there – something that is different from Game Informer. I strongly suggest checking this project out and consider contributing to it. CyanLanding-300x1873. Obduction by Cyan, Inc.

If you are an older PC Gamer – heck even some of the younger PC gamers may know the names of the games if not played the games – then you remember Myst and Riven. Obduction is a new, real-time, first-person adventure game by the creators of Myst and Riven and the game is designed in their spirit. Or, to put it simply, Obduction will be the spiritual successor to Myst and Riven.

Launched Oct. 17, the project has a month to reach it’s funding goal of $1.1 million. As of Oct. 24 – 6 days post launch – they have raised more than half of their goal with $579,733.

Obduction is being touted as “an entirely new property, delivered using one of the most powerful game development technologies available today. Obduction is an adventure game for the new millennium that stays true to the concepts that made the genre great.” And “is being built with the same framework that made Cyan’s earlier games such a wonderful experience: stunning landscapes, deep storyline, engaging characters, dramatic soundscapes, and challenging yet intuitive puzzles.”

As this year marks 20 years since Myst was launched, it’s great to see the company creating a new IP.

For as little as a $25 contribution, you get a digital copy of the game as well as access to private forums and other little perks. For as much as $4,500 you can attend the launch party at Cyan’s HQ. For $10,000 you get to join in on a design session and attend the launch party with a bunch of perks – hint if you want this, there are only seven left as three have been claimed.

Like most Kickstarters, they plan to have stretch goals, but won’t be listing those until they reach their goal of $1.1 million.

kickstarterWelcome to another edition of KickStart This. We ended up skipping a week between me being sick then being shipped off to Fort Worth for my day job. This means a number of the projects have completed during that time and I discovered a lot more to write about this week and next week.

Before I take a look at the projects to talk about this week, let’s take a quick look at the KickStarter Projects mentioned in our previous articles to see how they are doing funding wise.

 

Project Standings as of Oct. 14, 2013

castAR1. castAR: the most versatile AR & VR system by Technical Illusions

A project that was in development, but got cut by Valve, continues on with Jeri Ellsworth, Rick Johnson of Technical Illusions.

castAR is promoted as being a versatile AR/VR system that bridges the physical world with the virtual world with 3D graphics. It’s not a holodeck – but it’s close. With this technology, though, who needs one?

castAR is a set of glasses that have micro-projectors, tracking and other things built in to them. They then come with a set of clip-on AR/VR Lenses which can transform the experience into true AR or VR.

In addition to the glasses, there is a “magic Wand” which can be used to interact with objects in the VR and an RFID Tracking Grids and more.

The system is still, obviously, in development, but they have been demoing the prototype at a number of gaming events across the country and now they’re looking for funding. The project just launched this morning, Oct. 14., and has 31 days to go. It has already raised $99,395 of the $400,000 needed to be successfully funded. indie-van-game-jam2. Indie Van Game Jam by Binary Solo

This project is one of several that showed up in my email box in the past two weeks and I figured it deserved a bit of coverage.

This project is described by the creators as “we travel in a van, make games, and ask independent developers how they make theirs. Think Man Vs. Food meets Indie Game: The Movie.”

The team hopes to create an 8 episode series where they visit 8 Indie Dev studios in 8 cities where they answer a question specific to their game and then that team looks at the game the guys are making in the van and give feedback on it. After that, the team finishes the game and releases it along side the episode. So there would be, in edition to an 8 episode webseries, an 8 episode video game – or 8 indie video games – however you want to look at it.

Their goal is to raise $46,000 – of which they have raised $3,435 – and they have 23 days remaining to fund the project. Most of the money they are raising goes into costs of filming, editing and transportation for the film – which is understandable if they’re traveling to 8 cities to film each episode.

artcade3. ARTCADE: The Coin-Op Art Book by Tim Nichols

A book dedicated to the art of arcade cabinets — that’s what this project is all about and promises to be a great addition to any arcade owner’s collection or even for anyone that has a love for retro gaming and the art that made it what it is.

The project has already exceeded its initial funding goal of £10,000, having raised £12,580 so far. With 7 days to go, it would be great to see it get further funding to help make the project even better.

Tim purchased the artwork for the book and owns the rights to publish them in this book and in the rewards associated with some of the graphics. What’s cooler – it’s a one man team working on the book. And you can tell by watching his video, it’s his passion. He’s really into what he’s doing – and he’s right. The artwork is underappreciated and perhaps this book will help with that.

star-realms4. Star Realms Deckbuilding Game by Robert Dougherty

This is another project that came my way via email in the past two weeks. I was given a chance to preview the project before it went live Oct. 4, but unfortunately due to being sick I didn’t even get to look at it till now.

If you’re a fan of Deckbuilding games like Dominion or Ascension, this game might be right up your alley. Ironically, Rob Dougherty is the co-founder of Ascension, so that might be why it falls into the same class of games.

Unlike Dominion or Ascension, this is a deckbuilding game based on outer space combat where you are trying to acquire cards you need to build your ship/station or engage in combat to beat your opponent. In order to win, your opponent(s) must have zero Authority. But don’t worry – they’re trying just as hard to take your Authority to zero too.

The game also looks to be portable, as described in the Kickstarter:

Star Realms will be released as both a physical card game and as a digital game for PCs, Macs and mobile devices. The entire physical card game will come in a single deck box that you can easily carry in your jacket pocket, backpack or purse.

The game consists of:

  • One 80 card Trade Deck
  • Two 10 card Personal Decks, consisting of two Vipers and eight Scouts each
  • 10 Explorer cards
  • 18 double-sided Authority cards for keeping score
  • One Rules Sheet

The project, which launched Oct. 4, has already reached it’s initial funding goal of $20,000 and is now working towards stretch goals. The first stretch goal at $25,000 has been unlocked as of today, so now they’re pushing towards the remaining goals. They currently have 6 stretch goals and have raised a total of $25,558.

For as little as $5 you can get in as a beta tester for the digital version of the game. If you’re into physical copies, $15 will get you a copy of the game without beta to the digital game. For $25 you get a copy of the game, entry to beta and promo cards for the game. The rewards to donations just get better from there. I’m seriously considering contributing to the project after I get my paycheck. With 19 days remaining, they’re likely to unlock their stretch goals. bot-colony5. Bot Colony, The First Game to Understand and Respond Intelligently in English by Eugene Joseph, North Side Inc.

This is the final Kickstarter project I learned about via email a little less than 2 weeks ago.

Bot Colony is an episodic sci-fi adventure PC title. It is being touted as the first game to comprehend English conversations and reply logically to the player. Instead of the traditional dialogue tree format, players will speak directly to the game AI to interact with the title. A public Beta is supposed to start in less than a month – sometime in Nov. 2013. Which brings us to the KickStarter Project.

The first line that caught my attention reading through the project was this promise: “Not only will your character be part of the game world, but you will be there interacting with the other characters using your own words. No other game does that.”

Now that would be kinda awesome, don’t you think? It brings back some of the elements that games have been missing for a while now. And the game looks good so far, so why do they need funding? They answered it best themselves:

“We need your pledges to continue development of the game until we do. Our Kickstarter project will be producing Riot, Episode 3 of Bot Colony, and getting it out before Christmas. We’ve defined stretch goals to fund additional episodes. By the end of the Kickstarter campaign, we hope to start selling the first 2 episodes, and we hope that sales will build up. But we need your help to carry on until sales build up, and are sufficient to fund the game. “

Makes a lot of sense. The project is hoping to raise $100,000 – with only 15 days remaining and only $2,348 CAD to go, it could definitely use some support and sharing. For as little as $18 you can get the first couple of episodes of the game. For $30, you get the episodes and any that are released in the first six months. There are many other funding options and rewards available as well. Check them out and if you like the game idea, consider contributing. And as always, if you can’t afford to contribute, you can always share the project.

KickStart This: Week of Sept. 30, 2013

kickstarterWelcome to another edition of KickStart This. This marks article number 11 in the series for this year.

Before I take a look at the projects to talk about this week, let’s take a quick look at the KickStarter Projects mentioned in our previous articles to see how they are doing funding wise.

Project Standings as of Sept 29, 2013

Now that we have finished the reviews of previous funding items, we’re going to look at five new projects.

sojourner-tales1. Tracy & Laura Hickman’s Sojourner Tales Board Game by Tracy Hickman

A long time fan of the novels of the Hickman’s, it comes as no surprise that I’d be interested to see what their board game was about and what the perks for supporting it were on Kickstarter. When I first saw this project (a week or two back), it hadn’t had a lot of support, but over the last two weeks it gained momentum and has succeeded in funding, even though it has 10 days to go.

Soujourner’s Tales is described as “a board game featuring new, downloadable ebook adventure modules that make the experience new every time you play.” It’s hard to explain what the game is because it changes each time it’s played, as each time the tale is played out.

The game can be played with printed out versions fo the game or via ebook readers/tablets.

In addition to the base game, people can by additional tale modules. Not only that, people are going to be allowed to market and sell their additional modules through the game website. Per theKkickstarter “ We want YOU to write adventures for our game and so we are even providing you with a ‘grass-roots licensing option whereby you can not only create your own Sojourner Tales games but (with our license) also sell those adventures on our official website.”

For as little as $45 you can get a copy of the gameboard as well as the DIY gameboard. For as little as $75, you get “everything in the Explorer Package above PLUS a one year license to write, sell and distribute Sojourner Story Modules (SSM). We will provide you with sanctioned logos for Sojourner Tales and space on our website where you may promote and sell your designs.”

While the project has raised its initial funding goals of $26,000, there are stretch goals left to be met. The first stretch goal of $30,000 has been reached and unlocked “Improv Rules”. Next stretch goals unlock at $33,000 and $35,000 with other stretch goals between there and the final $45,000 stretch goal.

logoterminus_for_kickstarter22. Terminus by Ryan Czech

Terminus is a Sci-Fi city-builder game set in the future on a distant, inhospitable planet where a single colony is set up with a hope to survive and be the future. Each new game takes you to a different planet with a different set up – almost Sim City like in nature. You play as the colony administrator, deciding what to build and where, what to research, etc.

I’ve always loved city-building sims and was a huge fan of Sim City through 2000 or so and this game looks to be a unique twist on the game. With 18 days remaining and only $8,344 raised of the $28,000 goal, this game could use a little push for funding. ballads-of-reemus-23. The Ballads of Reemus 2 – 2D Point and Click Adventure Game by Jay Ziebarth

I was informed of this Kickstarter via email from VGSmart Press in their news about games they do PR for. Seeing as they rarely send out information about Kickstarter projects, I decided this would be an interesting one to add to my KickStart This article this week

The Ballads of Reemus 2 is, obviously, the sequel to The Ballads of Reemus which was released in 2012. The games are inspired by Lucas Arts games and fall into the same category of “Monkey Island” and “Day of the Tentacle”. They are 2D point and click comedy adventure games.

“The story revolves around Reemus, a medieval exterminator and his loyal sidekick Liam the purple bear as they battle giant insects in a quest to legitimize “extermination” as a heroic career path.”

The game will be coming out for PC and Mac/Linux first, then porting over to Android and iOS, etc. Currently a little more than 1/3 of the $15,000 CAD needed has been raised. With 19 days to go, I figured it was the perfect time to look at the project.

For as little as a $15 contribution, you are guaranteed a copy of the game. For $55 you can get an autographed collectors edition and other rewards. And if you really want to spend a lot – like $2,500 – then you get a song written and sung about you by Liam, Reemus cohort, as well as a ton of other rewards.

beyoond-eyes4. Beyond Eyes by Sherida Halatoe

This game came to my attention a couple weeks ago when one of my friends on Facebook shared it – unfortunately I can’t recall who shared it so I could give them credit for it.

Beyond Eyes is a game where you help guide a blind girl named Rae to find her lost cat using only the senses available to her: memory, sound, touch and scent.

The part that really drew my attention to the game was this description in the project “As you guide Rae through this unfamiliar world your behavior as player influences the way she feels and behaves. A player who forces her in to dangerous situations finds himself with a scared, distrustful girl who will refuse to do his bidding until he regains her trust. Of course if a player respects Rae’s wishes and is careful to keep her from harm, she will open up to him and will trust him in scary situations.”

That type of AI is always interesting. I found it interesting to work with from a different way when playing Assassin’s Creed. In this game it’s being used to help guide the girl – don’t make he distrust you.

The game needs $10,000 Euros to be funded and has raised $1,004 so far. With 24 days remaining, it might reach its goal. Unlike the Kickstarter projects, which are all or nothing, this is a flexible funding project, so they will get whatever is donated, even if they don’t reach the goal.

incredible-expeditions5. Incredibile Expeditions: Quest for Atlantis by Liz Spain

When I first added this project to my list of interesting projects, it was well on its way to being funded, so it was relegated to my list of projects that were “funded” and would be discussed in future articles.

Incredible Expeditions: Quest for Atlantis is a steampunk deck-building game that lets you explore fantastic places and battle against otherworldly creatures. The game pairs storytelling with tough decision making based on the cards you have in your hand. It reminds me a lot of another deck-building game: Dominion.

A part of me wishes I had had funds to back the project because the exclusive Collectors Edition for Kickstarter backers looks amazing.

  • Rage Against Hel by Sean Eike raised $1,469 of $25,000 needed. As it was a flexible funding program, Sean is going to continue on with the comic book and possibly have other funding projects later on.   • Precinct Game through Staged Funding. Funding for this project continues and is at $11,961. They still need to raise a little more than $13,000 to achieve their first stage of funding.   • Awesomenauts-starstormAwesomenauts: Starstorm completed their funding project Sept. 18. Their initial goal of $125,000 was well exceed. They raised a total of $345,835.   • Tabletop Connect: 3D Virtual Tabletop for Windows and Mac by Carl Pinder exceeded its funding goal of $22,500 and finished with a total of $34,061, unlocking four stretch goals.   • Case for Humanity by Greg Spence is 3465% funded. That’s right. The project only sought $1,000 in funding and raised $34,650. Do you like card games? Talk about a very successful campaign. Congrats Greg!
  • Tetrapulse by David Laskey is sitting at a little more than half funded, with $11,750 of the $15,000 to be successfully funded. With a little more than one day remaining, he may reach it, but could still use the push.   • The Bounty by Dave Vogt has seen some movement since the last article, raising $145 of the $2,500 sought to fund the project. This is a flexible funding project, so they will get whatever is donated, even if they don’t reach the goal.   • Attack of the Gelatinous Blob: RTS game meets tower assault by Paper Machete Games is at $1,817 CAD of the $20,000 CAD needed to fund the project.   • Bionic Fighters- Super Smash Bros Style Combat by Imagination Vent failed to raise funding needed to make the game. A little more than $5,000 of the $75,000 needed was raised. I wish them luck in their future endeavors.
  • STEM System: The Best Way to Interact with Virtual Worlds by Sixense is still going strong having raised more than half a million dollars towards the project. With 18 days remaining, it will likely garner more donations and attention. Now to look at projects that we found interesting for this week.

tinker-deck-photo1. Tinker Deck-Steampunk Playing Cards by Tesh of Project Khopesh

This project recently achieved and exceeded its goal of $11,000 – it wasn’t close to that when I put it on my list to cover. With 11 days remaining and $11,270 raised, it looks like the Steampunk inspired playing card deck will make its way to production.

The Tinker Deck is described as “a set of fully customized playing cards, inspired by steampunk designs and old machinery. I’ve infused all of the art in the deck with textures from photographs I took in the mining town of Eureka, Utah. There’s just something fascinating about old, worn metals and machines. That photography trip inspired the Tinker Dice I designed, and really made this Tinker Deck come together.”

The success of the Kickstarter project (which it has been funded and now can continue to receive further funding) would decided whether or not this deck would be printed by Bicycle on card stock or on something else – since it reached funding, Bicycle will be printing the decks.

The project does have stretch goals and the cards would be a must have for anyone that’s into Steampunk. shantae2. Shantae: Half-Genie Hero by Wayforward

This promising HD adventure game by the developer of popular games such as Contra, Adventure Time and Ducktales Remastered is close to reaching its Kickstarter goal of $400,000. With 10 days remaining and $395,910 raised, chances are this project will reach and exceed its funding goals.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero puts you in play as the Genie Shantae where you fight monsters, dance, solve problems and more to discover who the new evil power in the world is and banish it. The game is set to be released in chapters, so you meet new characters and get to new levels as you go.

If they achieve the funding goal, three chapters and the ending of the game will be able to be completed, but like with most projects, they have Stretch Goals as well which will add different gameplay modes, extra chapters and more.

might-no-93. Might No. 9 by comcept USA, LLC

This project is 269% funded, raising $2,425,297 of the $900,000 it needed to get funded. With 8 days remaining and 5 stretch goals to reach, the project is bound to acquire more funding, which is why we’re looking at it.

Mighty No. 9 is described as “an all-new Japanese side-scrolling action game that takes the best aspects of the 8- and 16-bit era classics you know and love, and transforms them with modern tech, fresh mechanics, and fan input into something fresh and amazing!” The game is being designed for PC, but if enough funding is acquired it will be ported to consoles as well.

The other interesting topic behind the game is the point they have on their Kickstarter of: “Every aspect of development—art, level design, music, programming, etc.—is being handled by veteran Japanese game creators with extensive experience in the genre, and with Mega Man in particular, all the way up to and including the project’s leader, Keiji Inafune himself! Backers will have unprecedented access to seeing this team at work through blogs, podcasts, videos, concept art—the works!”
That makes the game sound even more amazing than before.

River-City-Ransom4. River City Ransom: Underground by Conatus Creative

River City Ransom: Underground is an officially licensed, North American follow-up to one of the most beloved RPG beat’em ups of all time – River City Ransom. If you can ignore the fact it has been 20 years since the original game came out, it’s all good – and for anyone who enjoys retro games, the time between the games won’t make much of a difference, right?

If you like fighting games, this sequel should get your interest.

The project currently is sitting at slightly more than halfway to the $180,000 CAD goal and has 15 days to reach the goal. GCW-Zero-handheld5. GCW-Zero Open Source Gaming Handheld Device by Justin Barwick

This is one of those projects that also escaped my notice earlier this year when it was being funded because it was hidden under the Technology section (don’t worry, I’m checking that section regularly now).

This project was 183% funded by it’s funding date of January 28, 2013, raising $238,498 of the $130,000 goal.

GCW-Zero was described as an open-source handheld gaming device designed by gamers for gamers with a processor powerful enough to run classic PC games, emulate classic console games and run homebrew games. The Developers of GCW-Zero are also dedicated to making sure as many games and applications players want to have on it work on it.

Which explains why they got as much funding as they did.

This looks like an interesting handheld device and I hope to get my hands on one in the future.
